The Mysterious Technique of the Cat: What Aikido Can Teach Us
Open online lecture (in English)
Part of an ongoing lecture series on the philosophy and psychology of martial arts
Lecturer: Angelina Demilhanova – psychologist, psychotherapist, Aikido teacher.
In this lecture, we take a classic Zen/budo story about the “mysterious technique of the cat” as a starting point to explore what Aikido can teach us about learning, mastery, and cultural practice.
We will discuss:
✅why learning in Aikido begins with imitation but cannot end there;
✅how timing, distance (maai), and presence shape both technique and interaction;
✅how Aikido is translated across cultures and what changes (or remains) in this process;
✅what it means to teach Aikido as transmission of principles rather than copying of forms.
